What happened between FIFA and EA Sports?

Here's some background on why this is EA's final FIFA game. On October 7, 2021, fans around the world discovered that Electronic Arts filed a trademark in the UK and Europe for a "computer gaming software" called EA Sports FC.
In a statement posted to EA's website that day, EA explained that it is "exploring the idea of renaming our global EA Sports football games. This means we are reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which has All other official partnerships and licenses of the Independent of FIFA itself) ds rights to its name and likeness. We understand that it is the relationship between EA and FIFPro that allows real player faces and names to appear in EA's games.

FIFA itself, the governing body of football in real life, issued its own statement on October 15. One that stands out is this quote: "FIFA is optimistic and excited about the future of football gaming and esports, which clearly requires a space occupied by multiple parties that control all power." Another interesting dig King put it this way: "FIFA is working with a variety of industry players, including developers, investors and analysts, to build a long-term view of the gaming, esports and interactive entertainment space." So it sounds like FIFA is looking to New partners to collaborate with other partners outside of EA.
Now we know that EA Sports and FIFA will be teaming up for the last FIFA game, FIFA 23, before the two companies part ways. Starting next year, EA will be working on EA Sports FC, while the FIFA organization works with other gaming partners.
